Asmodeus

Prince of Judgements · Father of Discord

Asmodeus — the demon-king of the Book of Tobit, later fixed in the Solomonic tradition as "prince of seventy-two." In the qlippothic hierarchy he rules the fracture between body and will.

The fullest early account is the Book of Tobit (2nd c. BCE): Asmodeus slays Sarah's bridegrooms until cast out by Raphael. The 4th-century Testament of Solomon records him as a prisoner of the ring. In the Ars Goetia he is the 32nd spirit, three-headed.

Renaissance demonology ties Asmodeus to the ruin of marriages; baroque iconography shows a trident on a base. 19th-century treatises reframe him as archetype of discord carried within the person.
